Records set in Humboldt’s second-place finish at Neodesha

The Humboldt volleyball team rewrote parts of their record book on Saturday at the Neodesha Invitational.

The Lady Cubs placed second in the tournament with a 3-2 record but the most notable things happened in their three-set win over Baxter Springs.

Each set was close and high-scoring with the Lady Cubs taking set one 30-28 before falling in set two 25-23 and coming back to take set three 28-26. During the sets, senior Aricah McCall went off offensively, registering 24 kills, the most kills ever recorded by one Lady Cub in a match.

McCall was not alone. Junior Alayna Johnson also broke the school record for assists in a single match with 45.

Those two performances along with double-digit digs from Madison Gean, Morgan Mauk and Emma Johnson helped push the Lady Cubs to victory. Gean was also just a kill away from a double-double, ending the match with nine.

In the other matches, the Lady Cubs beat Caney Valley in two-sets 25-12 and 25-8.

McCall had eight kills, Alayna Johnson had four aces and 21 assists and Morgan Mauk led the way in digs with six.

The Lady Cubs also beat Parsons in two sets 26-24 and 25-22.

McCall had seven kills and Kaylie Johnson had five. Kaylie and Emma Johnson each had two aces and Alayna Johnson had 16 assists. McCall and Alayna Johnson each had six digs.

The Lady Cubs lost to the host Blue Streaks in two-sets 25-18 and 25-22.

McCall had four kills, Alayna Johnson had 11 assists, Madison Gean had six digs and McCall and Mauk each had two aces.

Humboldt ended its day with a close three-set loss to Southeast-Cherokee 25-18, 26-24 and 23-25.

McCall had 15 kills followed by Camrie Farran who had eight. McCall also had a team-high three aces. Alayna Johnson had 11 assists and Emma Johnson had 11 digs.

The Lady Cubs head into their final match of the season at home versus Leon-Bluestem and Fredonia today before sub-state play begins at Uniontown on Saturday.
